It's hard to be a Californian

Source: KTLA

I am hoping today we hear about whether or not, Foodie gets this studio apartment. The rental market is bad here at the moment. After last year's devastating fires, people who lost their homes, are renting and there just isn't nothing available. Not to mention, we are a semi-rural town and rents were not that high but now, the landlords have hiked the rent quite a bit plus are now wanting 3 times the rent for income approval. Come on now - this isn't the big city. But, they are getting it. Another thing that is unfair is every time you put in an application, they ding your credit and you lose 10 points. For young people who are trying to build their credit, that really hits.

He's not thrilled about the studio - but it is a month to month and at least he could get settled. Last night, he stayed for a home-cooked dinner. He hasn't been drinking nor do I smell it on him. Now after he leaves the house, he may but I kinda doubt it since he is sleeping on the sofas of his fellow employees. He is trying to tread lightly, while he needs to. I only wish he could manage to do that with us. I guess it's easier to be nicer to your friends than to your family...

Tomorrow we make the 2-hour drive to Sacramento for the CalPers workshop. My husband has already put in his last day at work officially so we're set for that. It's 1 month and 26 days left.

Gas has sure been high. $4.00 a gallon. Once he retires, we won't be driving as much. Filling up the van, it's about $320 a month just in gas. I remember back in 2008, gas was over $5.00 a gallon. That was when we were moving up here from the bay area and we also had a 34-foot motorhome we had to fill up as well as 2 vehicles.

Tomorrow the powers that be, are telling us that PGE is supposed to turn off the power to 35 counties for several days to reduce the risk of wildfires. Just wonderful. Granted it won't be everyone; just areas within these counties - about 700,000 homes and businesses. I just hope we are not one of them. At least it won't be 100 degrees! I'm telling you, Alaska is looking better and better for us, all the time!

  3. Debby, When a person makes low wages they can afford gas to get to work. Breaks my heart . I have pinched pennies to get to and from work before. Car pooled with many. I pray for your son to do the right thing..you may remember an old song that says"You always hurt the ones you love"...I don't know why people can make the ones that love them the most ,suffer. Stay strong. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  5. My goodness, that gas is expensive. I've read a number of newspaper articles that say rent is high all over the country and is a big reason that young people have a hard time living on their salaries. When housing prices went up, most of the landlords in my neighborhood got rid of their tenants when they could, did a little remodeling, and sold their houses. The few places that are for rent seem to me to cost a fortune, especially considering that this is an old neighborhood and most of the houses are small.

  6. Thought about you last night when I heard the PG&E news on the radio. Last time I bought gas here it was 1.99 a gallon. Same price as a gallon of milk which seems just a little ridiculous.

  8. Yes, I got the message yesterday about the power shortage, and I called back to see if my area will be affected, and it's not. California is expensive with housing. It's the one thing I don't care for about our state. But there are so many other good things I love about it. Yikes, $320 a month in gas is a lot! I hope it gets better for when husband retires. It's good to hear your son is doing Ok. I hope he gets the studio apartment. It's so hard to get in to places nowadays. And Yea, what's up with three times the rent for income approval - doesn't seem fair, does it?
